Do you also know the name cilantro for coriander? It’s almost the same: cilantro refers to the leaves of the plant, while coriander refers to the tiny, round seeds of the plant. Like the names, the flavours differ: dried coriander seeds are used roasted and ground, while fresh coriander leaves are tender and lacy and exude a unique aroma – which some people love, while others, let’s put it mildly, don’t like. The history of coriander can be traced back to the Middle East; the Romans then brought it to Europe, where it was considered a rather exotic spice. Thüringer is an old, traditional German variety with good seed production.
